Fewer Than 50 Photographers in the World Hold This Designation. Here Is What It Means for Your Property.
When Sony built its Artisans of Imagery program, the criteria were simple and unforgiving: identify the photographers who push the technology furthest, produce the most technically demanding work, and represent the absolute ceiling of the craft. Marc Weisberg was named a Sony Artisan of Imagery, one of fewer than 50 photographers worldwide selected at the time of his designation.
For luxury residential clients, commercial developers, and multi-family property owners across Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Diego, that credential translates directly into the quality of your images. The Sony Artisan program is not a sponsorship or a marketing arrangement. It is a technical recognition — awarded to photographers whose work under real-world conditions demonstrates complete mastery of light, color, and the full capabilities of the imaging system.
This post explains what the Sony Artisan of Imagery designation means, how Marc earned it, and why it matters when you are hiring a photographer to represent a multi-million dollar property, a $500 million commercial development, or a luxury multi-family residential community.
“The Sony Artisan of Imagery designation is not given to photographers who use Sony gear. It is given to photographers who redefine what Sony gear can do.”

What Is the Sony Artisan of Imagery Program?
“Sony created the Artisan of Imagery program to identify the photographers who do not just use the technology — they define its limits.”
Sony’s Artisans of Imagery is an invitation-only program recognizing a small, globally selected group of professional photographers who demonstrate exceptional technical skill and a distinctive visual standard. The program spans photography disciplines — photojournalism, portraiture, commercial, architectural — but the bar is consistent across all of them: your body of work must speak for itself at the highest professional level.
Membership is not applied for. Photographers are identified and invited based on the work they have already produced in the field. At the time Marc was named to the program, fewer than 50 photographers worldwide held the designation. It remains one of the most selective technical recognitions in professional photography.
For Marc, the designation came after his real-world reviews of the Sony a7II and a7s — detailed, technically rigorous assessments documenting how the Sony mirrorless system performed under the demanding conditions of architectural and luxury real estate photography. The reviews gained wide readership because they answered the questions working photographers actually needed answered. Sony took notice.

What the Sony Artisan Designation Means for Your Property
“When you hire a Sony Artisan of Imagery to photograph your property, you are not hiring someone who knows how to use a camera. You are hiring someone Sony selected to represent what a camera can become.”
Luxury real estate and architectural photography is technically one of the most demanding commercial photography disciplines. You are managing extreme dynamic range — bright California sun through floor-to-ceiling windows against deep interior shadow — and the requirement to render both simultaneously without the image feeling processed or artificial. Most cameras fail this test. Most photographers fail it too.
The Sony mirrorless system — particularly the a7s and a7R series — changed what was technically possible in interior architectural photography. The combination of full-frame sensors, exceptional low-light performance, and dynamic range capable of holding both highlight and shadow detail simultaneously transformed what a single-capture image could deliver. Marc was among the first architectural photographers to document and publish this shift in real-world conditions.
For a $10 million estate in Newport Beach, a $300 million mixed-use development in Los Angeles, or a luxury multi-family community built by Irvine Company, the difference between technically adequate photography and technically exceptional photography is measurable — in buyer perception, leasing velocity, and the impression your property makes before a prospect ever sets foot on site.
How Marc Earned the Sony Artisan of Imagery Designation
“The recognition came not from a portfolio submission or a formal application — it came from the work itself.”
In 2015, Marc made a decision that was considered unconventional at the time: he sold his entire Canon kit and moved completely to Sony mirrorless. It was not a sponsored transition or a brand arrangement. It was a technical decision made after extensive real-world testing on actual commercial assignments, driven entirely by what the images showed.
The Sony a7s and a7II reviews Marc published were detailed technical assessments covering dynamic range, color accuracy, high-ISO performance, and real-world handling under the conditions of architectural and luxury real estate photography. They were widely read because they were honest, thorough, and answered questions that mattered to working photographers — not the questions a press release answers.
Sony’s invitation to join the Artisans of Imagery program followed. Marc’s role as an Associate Artisan of Imagery placed him alongside a small global cohort whose work represented the standard Sony wanted associated with their imaging platform. Every commercial assignment since — from Christie’s International Realty luxury estates to CBRE’s Los Angeles and San Diego commercial portfolios — has been shot on that same Sony system.

Three Markets. One Standard of Excellence.
“Whether it is a $20 million estate in Laguna Beach, a $500 million commercial development in downtown Los Angeles, or a luxury multi-family community in Irvine — the technical standard does not change.”
* Luxury Residential: Marc’s residential portfolio spans homes and estates ranging from $5 million to $100 million across Orange County, Los Angeles, San Diego, and beyond. Clients include Christie’s International Realty, Sotheby’s International Realty, Berkshire Hathaway, and Compass — the brokerage names that represent the top end of the Southern California luxury market.
* High-End Commercial & Architectural: Commercial projects range from $30 million to over $1 billion. Marc’s commercial client roster includes CBRE across Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, Cushman & Wakefield, JLL, Clune Construction, Rexford Industrial, Silverstein Properties, and Westfield Century City. These are assignments where the photography directly supports leasing, investment, and development marketing at institutional scale.
* Luxury Multi-Family Residential: The Irvine Company — one of the largest private real estate companies in the United States — is among Marc’s long-standing clients. Luxury multi-family photography demands the same technical precision as high-end residential work, with the added complexity of community amenity spaces, model units, and lifestyle imagery that drives leasing decisions at scale.

The Credential Behind Every Image
“Technical excellence is not a selling point. It is the baseline requirement for photography at the level your property deserves.”
When a $15 million property in Laguna Beach goes to market, or a $200 million commercial development in downtown Los Angeles goes into its leasing campaign, the photography does not get a second chance. Prospects form impressions in seconds. The images either command attention or they get scrolled past. The technical foundation — the camera system, the photographer’s mastery of it, and the credentials that validate that mastery — determine which outcome you get.
For luxury residential clients in Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Beverly Hills, and La Jolla, that means images that render a property the way it actually feels — not the way lesser technology approximates it. For commercial clients working with CBRE, Cushman & Wakefield, or Clune Construction on institutional-scale projects across Los Angeles and San Diego, it means consistency, professionalism, and imagery that performs at the level of the asset it represents.
For multi-family residential clients — from Irvine Company apartment communities to Lennar developments across Southern California — it means lifestyle imagery that drives leasing decisions before a prospect ever visits the property in person.
